Dr. Seuss Fun!

Are you ready to learn about all the fun things we did for Dr. Seuss day!?

We had a blast and also took the time to review some skills we were struggling with.

During math, we focused on finding fractions of a set.  I read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and then used goldfish crackers in a fish tank to represent a group. We placed goldfish in the tank, then the kids were asked to find a fraction of the group.

If there were 10 fish in the tank and they needed to find 1/5 of the group, then the students placed the fish into 5 equal groups since that number is the denominator.  The numerator tells them how many groups to look at, so they look at 1 and count how many goldfish are in it.  The answer would then be 2!

The kids loved it, and of course I let them eat the goldfish at the end! :]

Another group worked on measuring during math.  I read The Foot Book and they measured items in the room using inches and centimeters.

During reading we performed a Reader's Theater skit of Dr. Seuss stories.  The kids LOVED it!  They really got into their characters and enjoyed the fluency practice.  You can see them practicing in their groups before we performed.

We of course had to make and eat green eggs and ham!  I let the kids help me make them.  I love giving them chances to do life skill activities because many do not get these experiences at home.

The kids watched the progress along the way and documented details and descriptions for the green eggs and ham!

Here is the yummy treat!

Students recorded their observations on this page.

My teacher friend and I dressed up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 to really get into the spirit of Dr. Seuss Day.  The kids seem to always enjoy when we get into it. :]

Dr. Seuss Plans!

Monday is Dr. Seuss' birthday!  I put together some plans to celebrate ALL day with my kiddos.  Do you do anything exciting for Dr. Seuss?  At my prior school we would celebrate him for a week!  I am just planning on having a day celebration on Monday.

Here is what I have planned.

When my kids arrive in the morning, they are going to make a fun Dr. Seuss hat and place it on a sentence strip.  I also have them write the top five reasons they love to read.  Since Dr. Seuss is also known as Read Across America day, I thought it would be neat to see how kids felt about reading.  You can snag a copy below!

After my kids arrive and make their fun hat for the day, they will complete some fun math activities!  I thought I would read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  Then, they would practice fractions using goldfish crackers.  Students will use the goldfish crackers in the fish bowl to represent a whole. Then, they will determine different fractions of the crackers by dividing them into equal groups.  You can use this worksheet below that I plan to use with my kiddos while they work on fractions.

I will have another math group working on measurement.  I will read The Foot Book and then have students practice finding objects in the classroom and measure them using inches and centimeters.  You can download the recording sheet below.

After math, we will do some reading activities.  I decided to have my kids read and perform a Reader's Theater of Dr. Seuss stories.

After practicing our fluency with Reader's Theater, we will listen toThe Lorax and write about how we can help save the world.  My kids have been learning about the water cycle and the importance of preserving water during science, so this will be perfect for them!  Then, of course I will take a picture of my kids with the fun Lorax mustache!

I also plan to make green eggs and ham with my kids.  Then, they are going to describe the green eggs and ham.  My kids have been struggling with writing detailed descriptions, so I thought this would be fun practice!

To end the day, my kids will research Dr. Seuss and learn a little more about him!  You can grab the question sheet below.

I hope you have an awesome Dr. Seuss celebration!  Please share below how you celebrate Dr. Seuss!

Dr. Seuss Week

We started the week off with a bang!  Cat in the hat was one of our favorite stories! We made cat in the hat crafts to practice making AB patterns and fine motor skills.  They ripped up red paper to make the red pattern.  Then, students used Dr. Seuss books to find rhyming words.  They could be real or make believe!

For our writing this week, we compared and contrasted the Cat in the Hat and the cat in the hat snack we made.  The snack sure was yummy!!

We wrote adjectives about the snack!

Then we wrote adjectives about the cat in the hat!

Then we used the adjectives to write descriptive words about each topic.  Then, we wrote how they were the same and different.

Also, during Read Across America Week we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish!  We played a fishing game where the students had to catch a fish and write the number on the paper as well as the 3 numbers that come after it.

I made the fishing rods by getting sticks at Wal Mart, string, magnet pieces (sticky kind), clothes pins, and a hot glue gun.  I tied the string to the clothes pin and the stick and used the hot glue gun to secure it. I then attached a magnet piece to the clothes pin and to the back of the fish so that they could be "caught."

Green eggs and ham day!! We read the fun book and then made a prediction of whether we would like it or not.

All of the kids liked the treat except two! They ate it like crazy and wanted seconds and thirds!  What fun we had!

Friday was Dress like your Favorite Dr. Seuss Character Day!

The reading group that I teach practiced all week for a Reader's Theater performance.  One group did the Red Fish, Blue Fish play and another group did The Cat in the Hat.  They were wonderful!
